Shackles

A shackle is a U-shaped piece of metal secured with a pin or bolt across the opening. It is one of the most common connecting links in rigging, from lifting and towing to marine and structural work.

Selection

Which pattern to choose

Dimensions and working load limits for each pattern are in the tables above. Three points usually decide the choice: body shape, pin type, and whether the load stays in line.

Bow (anchor) vs. Dee (chain)
A bow shackle has a rounded, wider body that accepts multi-leg slings and loads that may shift. A Dee shackle has a narrower body and is used mainly for in-line, single-leg pulls.
Screw pin vs. bolt type
A screw pin is quick to fit and remove, suited to connections that are changed and checked often. A bolt type with nut and cotter pin resists rotation and loosening, and is preferred for long-term or permanent installations and where vibration is present.
Side loading
These patterns are rated for in-line loading. Side loading reduces the permissible load and should be avoided or specifically assessed.

Ratings and dimensions for G-209, G-2130 and G-2150 are in the model tables above. To compare the three patterns side by side, open the selection guide.

These are trade patterns rather than DIN or EN standard numbers. The ratings shown are those in general use for the pattern, cross-checked across several independent sources, and are not a claim of certification to any particular manufacturer's product.

Design and rating rules for these shackle patterns

  • Design factor 6:1. Shackles of these patterns are commonly supplied as grade 6, with the working load limit and grade permanently marked on the body.
  • Maximum proof load is two times the working load limit.
  • Minimum ultimate strength is six times the working load limit.
  • Sizes are normally supplied forged, quenched and tempered, with alloy pins.
  • Standard service temperature range is minus 40 degrees C to plus 204 degrees C.
  • Charpy impact requirement of 42 joules minimum average at minus 20 degrees C is commonly specified for offshore and lifting duty.
  • Working load limits may be reduced when a shackle is subjected to side loading. Multi-leg and angular connections must be assessed on the actual sling angle.
  • Referenced specifications include ASME B30.26, US Federal Specification RR-C-271F and EN 13889. Conformance to a specific edition should be confirmed at the enquiry stage.

How to select

How to select

  1. Dee for a mainly in-line pull; bow where several sling legs meet or the load direction can change.
  2. Screw pin when speed matters; bolt type where the connection must not loosen.
  3. Never side-load a dee shackle — the load should bear through the pin, in the plane of the bow.
  4. Check that the size and working load limit are permanently marked on the body.
  5. Match the shackle pin diameter to the fitting it passes through; a pin that is too large will not seat properly.

Applications

Lifting and crane riggingWire rope and webbing sling assembliesMarine, mooring and anchoringTowing and recoveryConstruction and structural liftingOffshore and industrial plant

Safety & use notes

  • Seat the pin fully. On bolt type shackles the cotter pin must always be fitted.
  • Never substitute a bolt of unknown grade for a shackle pin.
  • Take the shackle out of service if the eye is elongated, the pin is bent, or the body is twisted or worn.
  • Confirm the working load limit and safety factor for the size and pattern when you order.
Model types, related standards and manufacturing
Types & standards

Types & standards

  • Dee (chain) shackle — G-210, G-2150Narrow body shaped like a link of chain. Takes high loads primarily in line. Side or racking loads may twist or bend the body.
  • Bow (anchor) shackle — G-209, G-2130Larger O-shaped loop that accepts loads from several directions without developing as much side load. The larger loop reduces the overall strength slightly compared with a dee shackle of the same size.
  • Screw pin — G-209, G-210Fitted and removed by hand without tools. Best for temporary connections or where the shackle is changed often.
  • Bolt type — G-2130, G-2150Bolt, nut and cotter pin. The cotter pin prevents the nut working loose under vibration, so this pattern is preferred for long-term, permanent or safety-critical connections.
  • European large dee and bow patternsCommercial European patterns for general purpose connecting work.
Manufacturing

How it is made

  1. Components in this group are produced by the route that suits the part — forging for load-bearing items, forming or machining for the rest.
  2. Threads, bores and bearing surfaces are machined and gauged.
  3. Assemblies are put together and checked for movement where they have moving parts.
  4. Surface treatment is applied, then a final visual and dimensional check before packing.

What to check on receipt

  • The part matches the drawing or sample it was ordered against.
  • Threads and bores are clean and within tolerance.
  • No cracks, distortion or sharp edges at the load-bearing points.
FAQ

FAQ

What is the difference between G-209 and G-2130?
Both are bow (anchor) shackles. G-209 uses a screw pin and G-2130 uses a bolt, nut and cotter pin. The bolt type is chosen where the connection must not work loose, for example under vibration or in a permanent installation.
Bow or dee?
Choose a bow shackle where the load comes from more than one direction or where sling legs meet. Choose a dee shackle for a straight in-line pull, and avoid side loading it.
What safety factor do your shackles have?
The working load limit and safety factor depend on the size, pattern and standard. We state them with the quotation for the exact item you order.
Bow shackle or D-shackle — which do I need?
One connection in one direction → D-shackle. Two or more sling legs meeting at one point → bow shackle. A D-shackle has a narrow, straight-sided body that keeps the load aligned on the pin axis; a bow shackle has a wider, rounded bow that accepts multiple fittings and tolerates slight angular loading.
Screw pin or bolt type?
Screw pin is fast to fit and suits connections you make and break regularly, but it can work loose under vibration or rotation. Bolt type — nut plus split cotter pin — cannot unscrew, and is the right choice for permanent or semi-permanent installations and anything exposed to vibration.
How much does side loading reduce the capacity?
Published guidance states side loading can cut the working load limit by half or more, because the load is no longer shared across the full width of the pin. Centre the load on the pin, use spacers, or select a bow shackle for the geometry you have.
Can I swap a pin between two shackles?
No. Pin and body are manufactured and rated as a matched pair. Never fit a pin from one shackle into the body of another, even if it physically threads in.
