G-209 Screw Pin Bow Shackles

G-209 screw pin bow (anchor) shackles in carbon steel, electro or hot-dip galvanized. Large loop takes loads from several directions. Sizes and WLL on request.

Screw pin or safety bolt — which to choose

The G-209 pattern is a screw pin bow (anchor) shackle — the general-purpose choice for temporary rigging.

  • Screw pin shackles are used mainly for non-permanent applications — they are quick to fit and remove.
  • Safety bolt shackles (bolt, nut and cotter pin) are used for long-term or permanent applications, or wherever the load may slide on the pin and cause it to rotate.
  • Dee (chain) shackles are mainly used on one-leg systems, while bow (anchor) shackles are mainly used on multi-leg systems.
Caution — Never exceed the WLL marked on the shackle, and apply the angle factor when it is used in a multi-leg configuration.

G-209 is the U.S. pattern for a screw pin bow shackle, also called a screw pin anchor shackle. The body is a large O-shaped loop and the pin is a screw pin that threads into one ear of the shackle, so the shackle can be fitted and removed by hand without tools.

The larger loop is what distinguishes a bow shackle from a dee shackle: it accepts loads from several directions without developing as much side load. The trade-off is that the wider loop reduces the overall strength slightly compared with a dee shackle of the same size.

Key facts

  • Bow (anchor) pattern — a large O-shaped loop.
  • Screw pin, threaded into the shackle ear — no tools needed to fit or remove.
  • Best suited to temporary connections, or connections that are changed often.
  • Carbon steel, electro galvanized or hot-dip galvanized.
  • Size and working load limit are permanently marked on the body; values on request.

How it compares

G-210 is the dee (chain) version of the same screw pin shackle — narrower, stronger in a straight in-line pull, but not tolerant of side loading. Use G-209 where sling legs meet or the load direction may change. Where the connection must not work loose, use the bolt type pattern G-2130 (bow) instead of the screw pin.

FAQ

What is the difference between G-209 and G-210?
Both are screw pin shackles. G-209 is the bow (anchor) pattern with a large loop for loads from several directions; G-210 is the dee (chain) pattern, narrower and stronger for a straight in-line pull.
When should I use a bolt type shackle instead?
Where the connection is permanent, subject to vibration, or safety-critical, use a bolt type shackle such as G-2130. The nut and cotter pin will not work loose the way a screw pin can.
Do you hot-dip galvanize G-209?
Both electro galvanized and hot-dip galvanized finishes are available. Tell us the operating environment and we will recommend one.
