How many clips do I need?
The number, the spacing and the tightening torque all depend on the rope diameter. Send us the rope size and construction and we will supply the installation values for that size.
What is the difference between DIN 741 and EN 13411-5?
DIN 741 is a light duty malleable pattern for non-critical work such as fencing and hand rails. EN 13411-5 is the European standard for U-bolt grips: it sets material grades, type testing and installation instructions, and covers static load suspension and single lifting operations.
Can wire rope clips be used for lifting?
EN 13411-5 covers the suspension of static loads and single lifting operations, and explicitly excludes mine hoisting, crane rope drives and general sling terminations. Tell us the application and we will confirm what is appropriate.
Can DIN 741 wire rope clips be used for lifting?
No. DIN 741 was withdrawn in 1982 and DIN no longer regards it as representing the state of the art. It is a light-duty malleable cast iron clip intended for static, secondary purposes — handrails, fencing, netting and guard rails — and it is not rated for overhead lifting. For lifting duties, specify drop-forged clips to EN 13411-5 Type B or the equivalent U.S. forged pattern.
Which way round does a U-bolt clip go?
The saddle sits on the live (load-bearing) part of the rope and the U-bolt on the dead end. The traditional reminder is: never saddle a dead horse. Fitting it the other way puts the U-bolt on the live rope, crushes the outer wires and costs the termination a large part of its holding power.
How many clips do I need, and how tight?
Number, turnback length and torque all depend on rope diameter. Our clip installation table gives the figures from the Crosby clip instructions, cross-checked against Washington State WAC 296-155-33805 and British Columbia Regulation 296/97. Torque values assume clean, dry, unlubricated threads.
Do I need to re-tighten the nuts?
Yes. Apply the first load, then re-check and re-tighten to the specified torque — rope strands settle under load and the nuts lose tension. After that, re-check periodically as part of routine inspection.
