What DIN 5299 covers
DIN 5299 specifies snap hooks. The C form is a plain snap hook; the D form is fitted with a screw gate so the hook cannot open accidentally.
- Choose the D form (screw gate) wherever the hook could be loaded in a way that pushes the gate open, or where the connection must stay closed.
- Snap hooks to this pattern are general-purpose connecting hardware — confirm the rated load for your size before using them in a lifting application.

DIN 5299 is the German standard for snap hooks: a metal loop with a spring-loaded or screwed gate that opens to take a ring, chain or rope and then closes again. The 5299C pattern has a spring gate; the 5299D pattern has a screw gate.
The loop opposite the gate is the spine, and that is the part that carries the load. The gate is not load-bearing, and a snap hook should never be loaded across the gate.
Key facts
- 5299C has a spring gate; 5299D has a screw gate that cannot open by itself.
- The spine — the loop opposite the gate — carries the load, not the gate.
- Available with an eyelet at the base for permanent fixing to a cord, strap or chain.
- Carbon steel, electro galvanized. Aluminium patterns are also supplied.
- Snap hooks are connecting hardware — tell us the application so we can confirm the rating.
How it compares
Choose 5299C when the hook is opened and closed frequently, and 5299D with a screw gate where the connection must stay closed. A quick link is a simpler alternative for joining two components, and is tightened with a screw sleeve rather than a gate.
