DIN 1478 Turnbuckles

DIN 1478 closed body turnbuckles in carbon steel, electro galvanized. The sleeve body protects the threads from weather and site dirt. Sizes and WLL on request.

What DIN 1478 covers

DIN 1478 specifies closed body turnbuckles — also called pipe body turnbuckles, rigging screws or bottle screws — in sizes M6 to M48.

  • The tubular body encloses the threaded rods, keeping dirt and damage away from the threads and giving a cleaner appearance. Sight holes let you verify thread engagement.
  • One end carries a right-hand thread and the other a left-hand thread, so turning the body tensions the assembly without twisting the attached rope or cable.
  • Available with eye, hook or jaw end fittings.
Caution — Not for lifting — tensioning use only. Typical applications: architectural and marine rigging, stage and event installation, permanent structural bracing, and machinery anchoring.

DIN 1478 is the German standard for closed body turnbuckles. The body is a steel sleeve that completely encloses the threaded ends, so the thread is shielded from salt spray, rain, dust and concrete splatter.

That protection is why DIN 1478 is specified for yacht rigging and standing rigging, for structural tie rods, and for any installation where the turnbuckle will sit outdoors for years without maintenance. It is generally rated higher than the equivalent open body pattern.

Key facts

  • Closed body — a steel sleeve encloses and protects the threads.
  • Generally rated higher than an equivalent open body turnbuckle such as DIN 1480.
  • The usual choice for marine stays, structural tie rods and permanently exposed installations.
  • End fittings available as eye, hook or jaw.
  • Supplied in carbon steel with an electro galvanized finish; sizes and working load limits on request.

How it compares

Against DIN 1480, the trade-off is visibility against protection. DIN 1480 lets you see the thread engagement at a glance and is the common choice for lashing and fencing. DIN 1478 hides the thread inside a sleeve, keeps contamination out and is normally chosen where the load is higher or the fitting is permanently exposed. If you can inspect the fitting regularly, DIN 1480 is fine; if you cannot, specify DIN 1478.

FAQ

When should I specify DIN 1478 instead of DIN 1480?
Specify DIN 1478 where the thread needs protection from weather, salt or site dirt, where the fitting will not be inspected often, or where a higher rating is required.
Can I see how much thread is engaged on a closed body turnbuckle?
Not directly — the sleeve covers it. That is the trade-off for protecting the thread. Check the adjustment before installation and use locknuts where vibration is present.
Do you supply both standards?
Yes. DIN 1480 and DIN 1478 are both supplied, along with JIS, Korean, U.S. and Italian patterns.
