What EN 13411-5 covers
EN 13411-5 is the European standard for detachable wire rope terminations made with wire rope clips — the successor to DIN 1142.
- Two types: Type A malleable cast iron for medium-duty static work, and Type B drop forged for lifting duties. Type A is not recommended for critical overhead lifting.
- Clips are identified by the largest permissible rope diameter, e.g. “wire rope clip EN 13411-5 – S 22” for 20–22 mm rope. Components: SB 22 clamping jaw, SA 22 U-bolt, SC M16 collar nuts.
- In a quasi-static pull test a clipped termination reaches roughly 90% of the rope's breaking strength.
- Clips certified to EN 13411-5 must not be used for rope terminations on lifting appliances in hoisting operations (narrow exceptions apply), nor for mine shaft cables or permanent rope attachment in reeving systems to DIN 15020-1.

EN 13411-5 is the European standard for U-bolt wire rope grips. It sets the minimum safety requirements: the material grades for the clamp, saddle and nut, the type testing the product must pass, and the installation instructions the manufacturer has to supply.
In scope it covers the suspension of static loads and single lifting operations. It explicitly excludes mine hoisting equipment, crane rope drive systems and general sling terminations — worth knowing before you specify a clip for a particular job.
Key facts
- European standard for U-bolt wire rope grips.
- Covers material grades, type testing and mandatory installation instructions.
- Applies to the suspension of static loads and single lifting operations.
- Excludes mine hoisting, crane rope drives and general sling terminations.
- Number of clips, spacing and torque depend on the rope diameter — supplied on request.
How it compares
DIN 741 is the older, lighter malleable pattern used for fencing and hand rails and other non-critical work. EN 13411-5 is the standard to specify when the termination has to meet a defined safety requirement. Where the load is higher still, a drop forged clip is used instead of a malleable one.
